49 Events & Deals in Town This Week

Plus: How you can pitch in to help the victims of the fires

Hello, Gundo 👋

So… this wasn’t how we intended to start our first newsletter, but the reality and gravity of what’s happening with these fires mere miles from our town is on the top of our minds.

While tragedies bring unthinkable pain and sadness, they also have a way of bringing out the best side of humanity.

If you know you want to do something but don’t even know where to begin, here’s a link to the Los Angeles Times’s list of things you can do to help the victims. Also, there’s a local donation drive here in town today. And when we hear of other local efforts happening during this week (before our newsletter next Thursday), we’ll make sure to share them on our Hello Gundo Instagram.

While this week has been heavy for many, we still want to share ways to come together — whether to find a little joy, support, or connection.

Here’s what’s happening around the neighborhood this week.

— Angie & Sam

Gundo Scoop

Hey, there’s a new mayor
In case you missed this, while you were on vacation, City Council has elected Chris Pimentel as the new mayor of El Segundo.

Hey, there’s a new sign
It was harder to miss this.

Even more conveniently-located L.A. chain chicken
[outside the 🫧 warning] LA institution Zankou Chicken is coming to the South Bay this summer. Location is 17100 Hawthorne Blvd., Lawndale (where Boston Market used to be). First Calif. Chicken Cafe last year and now this!

Who are you and why are you doing this?

We’re Angie and Sam Greenspan. We moved our family to El Segundo in 2016 and have gone all-in on the community ever since.

If you’ve ever asked a question about where to go or what to do around town, someone’s likely directed you to Angie to answer it.

But Angie found she was following dozens and dozens of Facebook groups, local group texts, and Instagram accounts — and it shouldn’t be that hard to keep up with what’s happening in a relatively small town.

We realized that with our combined set of skills, we were the right people to solve that problem. Angie’s a realtor who works here in town and all over L.A. — so she’s plugged in to everything happening. Sam’s a writer and an exec at an email marketing company. If we couldn’t put together the best possible El Segundo newsletter, then what are we even doing?

So… we did it. We have no idea what this newsletter could become, but we’re here for the ride to find out.

And we’re thrilled you’re here for the ride as well.

— Angie & Sam
